Timbrel vaulting to sustain Africa’s concrete industry?

Concrete.TV interviewed architect Rogan Rich from Richlabs Architecture about sustainable technology used during timbrel vaulting systems. According to Rich “Focus should be on using concrete within a built environment and bring timbrel vaulting structural system back into Africa where it had originated”.

The system was invented in North Africa and moved across to Spain where it was responsible for constructing many buildings in and around Europe. At Richlabs Architecture, they pride themselves in designing innovative, sustainable buildings. Timbrel vaulting provides a sustainable roof and floor construction method because it uses less building materials than any other conventional techniques.

This method resolves carbon emissions and is ideal for Africa and other remote areas because it uses local materials and does not require any imported steel. With Richlabs Architecture showing efforts on developing rural landscapes, Rich believes that it is crucial to empower the local community and involving them in the construction of a local building.
